Ever wonder what NOT to do as you are building backlinks for your website?

When link building, try to keep it as natural possible. You may be wondering what I mean when I say "as natural as possible," so I will explain. Build backlinks with sites that are related to your site. With the new update of Google Penguin, you will be penalized for having backlinks that are not related to your site at all. These mostly come in the form of spam sites, where people just drop links all over the place. This used to help your website in the short run, but now it will not even help your website at all because Google is only getting smarter when crawling your backlinks.

Instead of just linking to the homepage, link to a specific page within the website. By doing this you are taking that person to a specific new product or cool new release that they want to know about. This can also lead to a better conversion on your website by taking them directly to that page. Be sure to keep the link building as natural as possible.

Another big no-no for link building is buying large amounts of links. This is more of an older tactic, not being used that much anymore. Mostly due to Google constantly updating their search engine bots that crawl the websites and tweaking algorithms. If Google notices that you have tons of links that were bought, you will be penalized.

Another tactic that doesn't work anymore is placing links on websites that don't have any real content, or are spammy.
